Your answers are used to suggest names, and that's all. We don't keep them on our servers, we don't have accounts, and we don't sell anything about you or show you ads.
This page explains what Name for Bump collects, who helps us run it, and your rights. We, Bimsara W Perera, are responsible for your information (the "controller", in data protection law).
Your answers
To suggest names we ask about your family and what you'd like. Depending on what you choose, that can include:
- whether you're expecting a girl, a boy or twins, and when the baby is due
- your last name, and your other children's first names
- where the baby will grow up, and the languages they'll hear at home
- faith, naming customs, and people you'd like to honour
- names you like, names to avoid, and the styles and meanings you prefer
- what you thought of the names we showed you: the ones you loved, the maybes, the ones that weren't for you, and any reason you gave
When you ask for names, your answers are sent to our server, which sends them to Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI model, to come up with suggestions. Your last name is also sent on its own when we look up where it comes from. Our server doesn't save your answers once it has replied. It keeps recent last-name lookups in memory for a while, so the same name doesn't need looking up twice, but nothing there links a name to you.
Anthropic processes your answers on our behalf. Under its commercial terms it doesn't use them to train its models, and it keeps them only for a limited time.
Faith, heritage and pregnancy
Some answers can say something about your religion or ethnic background, or show that you're expecting. The law treats this as special category information. We only use it if you choose to give it, and only to suggest names. You can pick "Prefer not to say" for faith, skip the languages question, and choose "Not sure yet" for the due date. The faith and languages questions say so where you answer them, and by answering, you're giving your explicit consent to us using those answers this way. You can stop at any time by changing or clearing your answers.
What stays in your browser
- Your shortlist, your maybes, the names you passed on and the names you've already seen, in your browser's local storage, so they're there next time, each round can learn from them, and we don't repeat names. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.
- Your answers, in local storage, so next time you can carry on with a new round without answering again. They never leave your device for this. "Start again with new answers" on the home page clears them, and so does clearing your browser's site data.
- Your answers while you're at checkout, in session storage for that tab, so you can carry on where you left off. They're removed when you come back or close the tab.
Cookies
We use two cookies. Both are needed for the site to work, so we don't ask before setting them.
- nfb_free counts how many of your free rounds you've had. It lasts a year.
- nfb_pass holds your Name Pass, if you have one. It lasts until the pass ends.
We don't use analytics or advertising cookies.
Buying a Name Pass
Checkout is run by our reseller, named at checkout, which uses Stripe to take payment. The reseller is the seller of record: it collects your email address and payment details, charges you, handles VAT and sends your receipt, under its own privacy policy. We never see your card details. We see your email address, what you paid and when, and whether the payment was later refunded or disputed, so we can turn your pass on and keep it working only while it's paid for.
We email you a link to your pass when you buy it, and a code if you ask to turn it on in another browser. Those emails are sent through Resend, which processes your email address and the message for us.
Keeping the site safe
To stop automated abuse we count requests from each IP address, and requests for pass codes for each email address. The counts are kept by Upstash for no more than 24 hours. Vercel, which hosts the site, also keeps server logs, including IP addresses, for a short time for security and fixing problems. Our own logs record timings and which suggested names were dropped, not your answers.
Why we can use your information
- To suggest names, and to provide a pass you've bought: because you've asked us to.
- Faith, heritage and pregnancy answers: your explicit consent, as described above.
- Counting requests and keeping logs: our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and working.
- Payment records: the reseller keeps them to meet its legal and tax obligations.
